TRIM31. a member of the tripartite motif (TRIM) protein family, is an E3 ubiquitin ligase characterized by its conserved RING finger, B-box, and coiled-coil domains. Primarily localized to mitochondria, TRIM31 plays multifaceted roles in innate immunity, inflammatory responses, and cellular homeostasis. It modulates immune signaling pathways by ubiquitinating key proteins, such as NLRP3 inflammasome components, to regulate inflammasome activation and cytokine secretion (e.g., IL-1β). TRIM31 also interacts with viral proteins, restricting RNA virus replication (e.g., enteroviruses) through degradation or activity inhibition, highlighting its antiviral potential.
In disease contexts, TRIM31 exhibits dual roles.
