Aquaporin-12 (AQP12) is a member of the aquaporin family, transmembrane proteins that facilitate water and small solute transport across cell membranes. Discovered in 2005. AQP12 is primarily expressed in pancreatic acinar cells, where it is thought to play a role in regulating pancreatic exocrine secretion, particularly in the hydration and release of digestive enzymes. Unlike other aquaporins, AQP12 is localized intracellularly, mainly in zymogen granules and the endoplasmic reticulum, suggesting a specialized function in vesicular fluid dynamics during enzyme storage or secretion. Its gene, located on chromosome 2q37.3. encodes a protein with six transmembrane domains and conserved NPA motifs characteristic of aquaporins.
