Calretinin is a calcium-binding protein belonging to the EF-hand family, first identified in neural tissues. It is encoded by the *CALB2* gene (chromosome 5q32-q34.1) and has a molecular weight of approximately 29-31 kDa. Calretinin regulates intracellular calcium signaling, influencing processes like cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Antibodies targeting calretinin are widely used in diagnostic pathology, particularly in distinguishing mesothelioma from adenocarcinoma, as calretinin is strongly expressed in normal mesothelial cells and most epithelioid mesotheliomas but absent in lung adenocarcinomas.
