Caspase-1. also known as interleukin-1β-converting enzyme (ICE), is a cysteine-aspartic protease critical in mediating inflammatory responses and pyroptosis. It is synthesized as an inactive zymogen (pro-caspase-1) that undergoes autoproteolytic activation upon assembly of inflammasome complexes, such as NLRP3 or AIM2. in response to pathogens or cellular stress.
