The polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (PIGR) is a transmembrane glycoprotein critical for mucosal immunity. Expressed by epithelial cells in mucosal tissues (e.g., gut, respiratory tract, mammary glands), PIGR binds to dimeric IgA (dIgA) and pentameric IgM produced by plasma cells, facilitating their transcytosis across epithelial barriers.
