CDK5R2 (Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 5 Regulatory Subunit 2), also known as p39. is a regulatory protein that activates CDK5. a serine/threonine kinase critical for neuronal development and function. Unlike most cyclin-dependent kinases, CDK5 relies on non-cyclin activators, primarily p35 (encoded by CDK5R1) and p39. CDK5R2 binds to CDK5 to form an active complex, modulating its substrate specificity and localization. This interaction is essential for processes like neuronal migration, synaptic plasticity, and cytoskeletal dynamics in the central nervous system.
