BRRN1 (Barren homolog 1), also known as NCAP-H, is a key subunit of the condensin I complex, essential for chromosome organization and segregation during mitosis and meiosis. It belongs to the structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) protein family, which governs higher-order chromatin architecture. The human BRRN1 gene is located on chromosome 14q11.2 and encodes a 1.325-amino-acid protein containing conserved domains for ATP binding and protein interactions.

Condensin I, comprising BRRN1. SMC2. SMC4. NCAP-D2. and NCAP-G, drives chromosome condensation by inducing positive supercoiling in DNA, ensuring proper sister chromatid resolution.
