背景信息

Myelin basic protein (MBP) antibodies are autoantibodies targeting MBP, a key component of the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers in the central and peripheral nervous systems. MBP, produced by oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells, constitutes ~30% of myelin protein and plays a critical role in maintaining myelin structure and compaction. In autoimmune disorders like multiple sclerosis (MS), immune cells mistakenly recognize MBP as foreign, triggering inflammatory attacks that lead to demyelination and neurological dysfunction.

First identified in the 1970s, MBP antibodies gained attention as potential biomarkers for MS.
