CD62P, also known as P-selectin, is a transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the selectin family of cell adhesion molecules. It is primarily expressed on activated platelets and endothelial cells, stored in α-granules of platelets and Weibel-Palade bodies of endothelial cells. Upon cellular activation by inflammatory cytokines, thrombin, or other stimuli, CD62P is rapidly translocated to the cell surface, where it mediates leukocyte rolling and adhesion by binding to PSGL-1 (P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1) on leukocytes. This interaction plays a critical role in thrombosis, inflammation, and atherosclerosis.
CD62P antibodies are widely used as biomarkers to detect platelet activation or endothelial dysfunction in research and clinical settings. In flow cytometry, anti-CD62P antibodies help identify activated platelets in cardiovascular diseases, sepsis, or immune disorders. They are also employed in immunohistochemistry and functional studies to investigate leukocyte-endothelial interactions. Therapeutic targeting of CD62P with monoclonal antibodies or inhibitors has been explored to attenuate pathological inflammation and thrombotic events, though no approved therapies currently exist. Due to its transient expression and specificity for activated cells, CD62P remains a key focus in vascular biology and hematology research.
