背景信息

MB antibodies, also known as anti-myelin basic protein (anti-MBP) antibodies, are autoantibodies targeting myelin basic protein (MBP), a key component of the myelin sheath in the central and peripheral nervous systems. MBP plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of myelin, which insulates nerve fibers and ensures efficient signal transmission. The discovery of MB antibodies emerged from research on autoimmune demyelinating disorders, particularly multiple sclerosis (MS), where immune-mediated damage to myelin is a hallmark.

In the 1970s-1980s, studies identified elevated MB antibody levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of MS patients, suggesting their potential role in disease pathogenesis. These antibodies are thought to contribute to myelin degradation by binding to MBP, triggering complement activation or antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. However, their specificity and diagnostic utility remain controversial, as MB antibodies are also detected in other neurological conditions (e.g., encephalitis, stroke) and even in healthy individuals.

Despite limited clinical application, MB antibodies continue to serve as research tools for understanding autoimmune mechanisms in demyelination. Recent studies explore their interaction with genetic and environmental factors, such as Epstein-Barr virus infection, which may influence autoantibody production. Ongoing investigations aim to clarify their pathogenic significance and potential as biomarkers for disease subtypes or therapeutic response in MS and related disorders.
